One of our favorite stops in southwest Michigan. Off the beaten track, not only our their wines very good, but the food is outstanding. The chef always surprises you! The menu looks average, but the way the food is prepared is fantastic, original and always excellent, lunch or dinner. The view of some of the vineyards is breath taking and rustic. Anytime of year this is a must stop for us when we are within 40 miles it is that good.
The waitress seemed more worried about setting the tables up for the dinner (evening) meals. She was working on setting cups and stuff out on the tables in the dinning room, and worked on that more than waiting on us and the other guest in the restaurant. It was early afternoon so there was not a dinner rush -yet!
Even though there was only ONE other table with guests at it at this time. She sat us at a table with not the best view, and when we asked to sit closer to the window to enjoy the view, she sighed and complained about it not being the waitresses table- but did it. Then she made a point to complain to the waitress about it which we over heard since she was not talking back in a private area.
We also did not get drink refills...until we were done eating and only after asking and waiting and waiting...we paid a good amount for terrible service. Very disappointing meal....
I wanted to take my husband here so one day we drove up there (about 2 hours from our home). Service was awful! First there was no one was around to seat us so we assumed we just seated ourselves (which is what we had done when there with my friends from out of the area). After my husband and I sat down, a waitress came in and told us we had to leave the table and wait to be seated by the hostess. wow! really?! The hostess eventually came and -re-seated us. Terribly embarrassing to have to do this.
There’s was a sign on the vineyard "do not enter ... dangerous pesticide". OK, so I'll never buy their wine either.
We ordered the kids hamburgers. They showed up with cheddar cheese. Isn’t that a cheeseburger? Our kids don’t like cheddar cheese, wouldn’t it have been nice to ask us? The deserts were bad too.
It was aways such a treat to come here, to see what the chef had prepared. And it was always so good. He made seasonal specials, and had his touch in every food item. We always dressed up a little, which our young daughters loved, and the food would arrive at a very pleasant, leisurely pace. The amazing appetizers would fill you up.
We went to Tabor Hill Restaurant a couple weeks ago, for the first time since the ownership change. The food is now mediocre, the service ok, and the experience poor. It seems they've gone from "freshly made with local ingredients" to "freshly defrosted from the closest Restaurant Supply"
I ordered BBQ shrimp because all of my favorites were gone off the menu. Not sure what the sauce was, but it wasn’t BBQ.
The carpet is replaced, and there’s new pretty lights. I liked the new tablecloth too. The place looks more modern, with more clean lines, but they removed the charm and warmth the place had.
Maybe they should add a “Keep Out” sign to the Restaurant.
Then the waitress gave poor service. My husband is gluten free, she kept bringing the wrong items, and even though they were not busy,-we waited and waited for food. When she would bring the wrong item, if we waited for the right one-the other food would have gotten cold. So not everything was brought at the same time, to enjoy the whole meal together.
New Owners, we were told. I wanted the famous blue burger, which was amazing. They don't offer that anymore because they have a new chef. Don't have the Chocolate case anymore either. I had the rib-eye sandwich which was good tasting, but there was a big piece of gristle in the middle of it and had to take the meat out to remove it. The prices were also jacked up on everything. Wine is good as ever. Tastings went up to $10 now. My wife had the raspberry chicken which was just okay. Chef before was much better and the prices are higher. Will go somewhere else for a better meal. Even the cheesecake wasn't that good.
Food was delicious. Nice family atmosphere. Free licour samples. Would definitely go back.
How very sad.
The first time I ate here was in October of 2016. It was a wonderful experience! Great service and food. Ate with my friends who were from out of town and here for a conference. We really enjoyed our meal and visit.
It’s clear the new owners are all about business. We noticed right away as walking in that they got rid of the charm they used to have. They stripped the place. Instead of the store they have wine tasting tables.
The reason many successful restaurants fail ... The owner won’t stay out of the way.
We are going to miss Tabor Hill.
Those days are gone. The food comes flying out of the kitchen. We were one of only 4 tables, but clearly they want you to eat and get out.
The next surprise was that they cut the menu in half. They got rid of the chef, did you know that? The new chef clearly lacks the experience. The prior chef had us spoiled.
